PIWI WINE AWARD INTERNATIONAL publishes the 2022 ranking

PAR® quality test with 283 PIWI wines from 14 countries - increased average level - overall winner with 99 points comes from Switzerland

Frasdorf, October 2022 - It was an impressed PAR® Certified Master jury who, at the end of last weekend, left the tasting room of the PIWI WINE AWARD INTERNATIONAL in Frasdorf, Bavaria. Because the high average level of this year's ranking exceeded all expectations: the percentage of Grand Gold and Gold scores was 10 percent higher than last year, and that without any changes to the tasting scheme or medal table. A total of 30 Grand Gold, 130 Gold, 90 Silver and 20 Recommendations were awarded. The overall winner with 99 points is the 2020 Divico AOC from the Florian Ramu vineyard on Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The telephone debriefing will take place on 26 October.

  • White Wine Category the 2021 Donauriesling of Winzer Krems in Lower Austria with 97 points and Grand Gold.
  • in the category sparkling wine - the 2019 Muscaris Brut from the Hirschmugl Winery - Domaene aum Seggauberg in Styria with 96 points and Grand Gold.
  • Red Wine Categoriy the 2017 Rathay from the Mauser Winery in the Weinviertel with 87 points and Silver.

Other Grand Gold PIWIs of the 2022 tasting come from Sweden, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Italy and Switzerland. The complete ranking is available at winesystem.com/piwi-wine-award/results. By clicking on the PAR® logo, the respective data sheet for the wine appears.

High average level with a wide stylistic range

With a 10 per cent increase in Grand Gold and Gold, which corresponds to scores of 90 to 100 points, the PIWI WINE AWARD INTERNATIONAL 2022 was a tasting with a pleasingly high overall level - and that despite the large vintage differences that climate change is now continuously bringing to vintners worldwide. It is probably also thanks to these climatic fluctuations that there is a great diversity in terms of style.

WINE SYSTEM Quality Tester and PAR® Certified Master Alexander Morandell: "In the large field between traditional craftsmanship and high-tech vinification, there is a lot of experimentation going on at the moment. This does not necessarily make quality testing easier, but it does make it more exciting. While modern, reductive, fruit-driven styles have set the tone for years, the overall sensory picture is now becoming much more heterogeneous again. This is shown, among other things, by a look at the natural wine segment, which manages completely without SO2 additions and produces some impressive qualities.

Free telephone counselling for participants on 26 October 2022
