Nordic PIWIs on the rise: results and winners of the PIWI WINE AWARD INTERNATIONAL Autumn 2024
Focal points: PIWI-specific success factors, the added value of consistent quality control - and the results from Germany
Frasdorf, October 2024 - It is at the interface of nature and masterful craftsmanship that the jury of the PIWI WINE AWARD INTERNATIONAL was able to award Grand Gold. And there was plenty of it in this autumn edition: of the 145 wines submitted from 12 countries, 20 PIWIs received the highest award. The decisive criterion that set them apart from the equally strong qualities in the Gold category was this additional quantum of control, particularly in the areas of oxidation, malolactic fermentation and the addition of sulphur. The general quality trend on the scene is more than promising. The Northern European frontrunners in particular show that thorough quality management and stylistic flexibility to adapt to the individual characteristics of PIWIs are worthwhile. Outstanding examples were submitted by Weingut Jürgen Kachel in Württemberg as the front-runner, Weingut Hammel in the Palatinate, Schloss Rattey in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - also one of the overall winners with three Grand Gold PIWIs - as well as Weinhof Winter from Saale-Unstrut, the Franconian winery Jürgen Rebhann and Bergstraße Winzer eG on the Hessische Bergstraße. The detailed rankings with all sensory profiles are available at winesystem.de/en/piwi-wine-award/results-autumn-2024 available.
PIWIs, PAR® and quality control
While PIWI winegrowers have to deal with vines whose individual requirements the wine world is still learning a lot about, in addition to the stress of the climate, they obviously benefit particularly from the long-term evaluation of their wine qualities. Alexander Morandell, Head of Internal Quality Control at WINE SYSTEM, explains: "We often see significant leaps in the quality of wines from producers who work intensively with the PAR® evaluation sheets from our tastings. Many also took advantage of the personal debriefings - and were able to improve their results this autumn."
Sensory expertise: the double value of rankings
Word has got around in the industry that PAR® analyses are about much more than marketing. The findings from the detailed sensory data sheets are increasingly being utilised, as indicated by the growing demand for the free de-briefings with the PAR® Master Jury. In addition to adjustments in the vineyard - for example in the areas of foliage management, humus build-up and biodiversity - the current tasting also reflects oenological measures that have a positive effect on quality. These include masterfully planned maceration times, precise sulphur additions, clever combinations of wood and steel tank ageing and meticulously orchestrated cuvées. All of this has an influence on the style and can be a valuable aid in dealing with the effects of climate change - with new, sometimes sensational results.
