Gere Attila Winery (AKA KFT.)
Hungary - Villány-Siklós www.gere.hu Winery description: The history of the winery began 7 generations ago and the winery had to go through a long, challenging and hard-working journey in a spirit of tradition and innovation to create the current GERE brand, which is known both nationally and internationally. Today, the family estate extends to 70 hectares, and the youngest generation is also part of the daily routine at the winery. The aim of the winery is to realise a new, generation-spanning viticulture and winery - according to the old Hungarian model. After the Second World War, the peasant estates were ruined, and with the expulsion and deportation the series of family traditions was interrupted. Attila Gere also chose forestry as his profession. He first came into contact with winemaking through his silent father in 1978, whose traditionally produced artisanal wines gave him the idea that the red wines of Villány have enormous potential. Attila GERE and his wife, Katalin, at the beginning cultivated only a couple of square cords of vineyards in Csillagvölgy, which they received as a wedding present from their parents in 1978. The 1986 vintage was the first to be available on the market in bottles. In 1991 they opened the GERE pension, which was the first place to stay in Villány at that time. It was a daring idea, because wine tourism was completely undeveloped at that time, not only in Villány, but also in almost the whole of Hungary. Attila Gere gave up his profession in 1991 to found the Gere Family Winery, which is now one of the most famous wineries in Hungary. The winery started to grow slowly over the years. Today - thanks to the work of many years - the winery cultivates 70 hectares in the most outstanding valleys of the wine region. In addition to the family winery, the Gere-Weninger Winery, which we founded in 1992 together with the Austrian winemaker Franz Weninger in Villány, is still present today. The winery currently operates on an area of 10 hectares. In 1994, Attila Gere was awarded the honourable title of "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of his work. Three years later, with the 1997 vintage, a great dream came true: the first vintage of KOPÁR Cuvée was bottled. This was the time when the new plantings in excellent areas of the winery became fruitful, which made the production of a great wine possible. In 2002, the new storage cellar and processing building of the GERE winery was completed, whose technological equipment meets the most modern requirements. In October 2008, a four-star wine and wellness hotel was opened under the name of CROCUS GERE BOR HOTEL****, which brought the level of hospitality in line with the quality of GERE wines. The hotel's a'la cartre restaurant, Mandula restaurant and wine bar offer local gourmet cuisine based on the raw materials of the wine region for enthusiastic food lovers. In our wellness centre CROCUS Wine Spa, grape and wine-based vinotherapeutic treatments await the honoured guests. In 2010, Attila Gere and Vilmos Schubert founded the Villány Winery Csillagvölgy, which mainly deals with light, reductive white and rose wines and distributes the wines under its own brand and design.
