Key topics: high average level, oenological adaptability, quality management and the value of sensory tools.
Frasdorf, October 2023 – There were two awards on the tasting tables of the WINE SYSTEM jury last weekend: the fall editions of ORGANIC WINE AWARD INTERNATIONAL and PIWI WINE AWARD INTERNATIONAL. Both surprised with significantly increased average levels – remarkable, given the climatic challenges in viticulture worldwide. The jury sees one reason for the upward trend in the combination of oenological courage and expertise. Old standards have been dropped in many cases. They are making way for new styles in the service of quality. Prime examples of this progressive approach include PIWI Grand Gold winner ESmeraldo 2022 – ViverCi by Azienda Agricola Roberto Baldovin, Italy – or the 2022 Pinot gris reserve from the ORGANICs Grand Gold squad. The latter comes from organic winery Frühwirth in Austria, which is the overall winner with a total of 6 Grand Gold medals. The detailed rankings with all sensory profiles are available at winesystem.de/en/organic-wine-award and winesystem.de/en/piwi-wine-award.
Quality leaps and how they show in the ranking
The two autumn rankings show that international viticulture is capable of adaptation. In more and more cellars and minds, it is accepted that changing conditions lead to new wine styles when the quality factor takes precedence over the human need for custom.
Unlike other rankings, WINE SYSTEM reflects such developments 1:1. This explains that in the spring edition of the PIWI WINE AWARD a total of close to 30 percent of the wines were awarded Grand Gold and Gold; this fall 61 percent. With the ORGANICs it was an increase of 24 percent in the same period. Tasting director Martin Darting comments: „We neither artificially limit nor increase the number of top ratings. We believe that „good“ must remain good. In other words, just because many participants deliver high quality, that does not make the quality of the individual less valuable. We are happy to stand for this: Reliability, appreciation and transparency.“
The value of a Grand Gold medal
To achieve a WINE SYSTEM Grand Gold rating, a wine must maintain its quality for 24 hours after opening the bottle. So if a candidate is rated as a Grand Gold contender at the initial tasting, it is put to the test again the following day. For this, the quality assurance comes together – a designated committee within the jury of experienced PAR® Certified Master tasters.
