Hungary - Villány-Siklós www.weingut-wassmann.com    Winery description: WEINMANUFAKTUR WASSMANN The winery was founded in 2002 by Ralf Waßmann, a beverage technologist trained in Geisenheim, and Susann Hanauer, and since then we have been running our wine manufactory together. Our vineyards are located on the picturesque southern slopes of the Siklós district in the southernmost Hungarian wine-growing region of Villány, the most important red wine region in the country. The winery is located in the Danube-Swabian village of Dewetsch (Hungarian: Pécsdevecser) with 100 inhabitants. Our vineyards cover two hectares of vineyards planted with the white wine varieties Olaszrizling (Welschriesling) and Chardonnay, as well as with the red wine varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Portugieser and Merlot. Gault&Millau Hungary describes our winery as follows: "The first organic winery in Villány, which was founded by Susann Hanauer and Ralf Waßmann from Germany. Their wines are characterised by an exceptionally good balance, elegance and a distinctive style. ... The Wassmann Winery is already indisputably one of the best wineries in Villány." Our winery has been the first certified organic winery in Villány since 2003, in accordance with the guidelines of the EU regulations on organic farming. The certification is carried out by Biokontroll Hungaria HU-ÖKO-01. Since 2011 we have been the first winery in Southern Hungary to be a partner of Demeter International e.V. and from the 2012 vintage we offer our wines in certified Demeter quality. Our wines are also certified according to the Hungarian guarantee of origin and quality "Districtus Hungaricus Controllatus Villány" (DHC Villány). Since 2010, we have been advising more and more other wineries on converting to organic viticulture. The ecological cultivation of the vineyards means above all the renunciation of biocides and artificial fertilisers. Pest control is carried out naturally by beneficial insects such as ladybirds, predatory bugs, lizards and birds. This is promoted by greening and seeding. Hedges and trees additionally enrich the biodiversity and turn our vineyards into living biotopes. In the wine cellar, we consciously work without modern technology and additives, but with a lot of care and time. As organic winegrowers, we always use as little sulphur as possible and all our wines are vegan. In both 2015 and 2016, one of our red wines was voted one of the best 8 Hungarian red wines by the national wine expert commission. |
