The topics: Quality leaps for PIWIs, success factors in dealing with the climate and the double value of a WINE SYSTEM ranking

Frasdorf, May 2024 -
With the spring editions of the ORGANIC and PIWI WINE AWARDS, the WINE SYSTEM jury had two international tastings on the table. And just like in fall 23, dealing with climate change was one of the main sensory topics. After all, the climate is causing ongoing stress for the organic and PIWI scene too. And there are more and more winemakers who are adapting to this with creativity and expertise. Many of the participants use the PAR® sheets of the WINE SYSTEM Awards, which, with 28 parameters, allow valid conclusions to be drawn about the relevant adjustments in vineyards and cellars. The winemakers at Italian producer Mare Magnum, for example, are celebrating great success with this sensitive approach. With their modern, artisanal style, they have won three Grand Gold awards in the organic red wine category. And the PIWI rankings also demonstrate in many cases that quality management and stylistic flexibility do pay off. Best example: The Vejby Vingård winery in the Swedish region of Skane, which has achieved Grand Gold three times with its outstanding Qvevris. The detailed rankings with all sensory profiles are available at winesystem.com/organic-wine-award and winesystem.de/piwi-wine-award.

Quality leaps among PIWIs
While PIWI winegrowers, in addition to climate stress, have to deal with vines whose individual requirements the wine world is still learning a lot about, they in particular seem to benefit from the long-term evaluation of their wine qualities. This is evident at least from the results of the participants who have been sending their PIWIs to the WINE SYSTEM Awards for years. In 2024, the German PIWI pioneers from Weingut Höfflin in Baden and Weinhof Winter in the Saale-Unstrut region can celebrate Grand Gold. And newcomers to WINE-SYSTEM also show that expertise with PIWIs is growing in the industry. These include the VinVentum wine manufactory in South Tyrol and Glöckner winery on the Nahe river in Germany.

Sensory expertise: the double value of WINE SYSTEM's rankings
Word has got around in the industry that PAR® evaluations are much more than just a marketing tool. The insights gained from the detailed sensory data sheets are increasingly being used for quality management, as indicated by the growing demand for the free de-briefings with the PAR® Master Jury. In addition to adjustments in the vineyard - for example in terms of leaf management, humus input and biodiversity - vinification measures that have a positive effect on quality can also be seen in the current tasting. These include altered maceration times, reduction of sulphur additions, combination of wood and steel ageing and creative cuvées. All of this changes the style and counteracts the effects of climate change - with new, sometimes sensational results.
